To successfully litter train your rabbit is a long process, but we are here to help you along the way! It is important to remember that every rabbit is different, and each will learn at their own pace, so patience is the key!
We use a HOP litter box, which was specifically designed for rabbits. It features a built-in hay feeder and a special tray inside. If you are looking for a more affordable option, any standard cat litter box will usually suffice. There are several ways to set up the litter box, but we have found that the steps below work the best for us and make cleaning a lot easier.
First, put a disposable pee pad at the bottom of the litter box. This is optional, but it makes the cleaning process smoother and mess-free. Cover that with a layer of pine pellets, which absorb odors very well and are cheap. Put the tray on top, and then hay in a corner of the litterbox. Rabbits love to eat while in their litter.
Litter training your rabbit is a long process that requires patience, but it is doable with enough effort. To show a rabbit its litter, simply pick it up and place it in there to show the hay. Make sure to put all its droppings in the litter box. For accidents, wipe it up with a paper towel, and put the paper towel in the litter box. Doing this makes the rabbit assosciate it's scent with the litter box, which helps them understand what it is supposed to use it for. It is extremely important to thoroughly clean the accident so that your rabbit cannot smell it in the wrong place anymore.
It can be frustrating sometimes when a rabbit continues to have accidents, but they are very intelligent animals and will figure it out with time. It is important to keep in mind that each rabbit is different and learns at its own pace. Don't give up!
It depends on how much waste your rabbit makes daily, but we clean our rabbits' litter boxes once every three days. This ensures the odor does not become strong, and our rabbit always has a clean area to relax in. Be sure to put a handful of fresh hay in the litter box daily!
To clean a little box, dump all the pine pellets into a garbage bag, and wipe down the inside with a wet paper towel, cleaning any stray shavings. Put in more hay and put the litter box back together. It's as easy as that! Make sure to put the litter box in the same place as before.
Litter training takes time. Rabbits are smart, but some take more time than others. Be sure to remember to have patience, and keep trying!
