As the smallest of domestic rabbit breeds, the Netherland Dwarf's tiny stature (ideal weight 2 lbs) and affectionate personality make them wonderful 4-H partners and friends.
When showing this small rabbit, the ideal weight is 2 lb. However, the Netherland Dwarfs' weight can range from 1.5 lb to 2.5 lb.
Netherland Dwarf rabbits have short, soft fur that only requires brushing about once a week, and their small, erect ears are generally less prone to issues than lop ears. There is a wide range of acceptable colors for this rabbit, the most common being black, blue, chestnut, and white. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) categorizes its other colors into five groups: self, shaded, agouti, tan, and any other variety.
Netherland Dwarf rabbits have an energetic, playful nature, making them engaging pets. While they can be shy initially, consistent, gentle handling allowed them to develop fierce, loyalty and affectionate personalities. Their alertness and high energy mean they need dedicated playtime outside their cage, which encourages exercise and strengthens the bond with their handler, which is a huge plus to showmanship success.
Due to their flat faces, they are prone to malocclusion, or misaligned teeth. When showing, judges check teeth very carefully!
Other healthy concerns include GI stasis, which can be caused by stress, and respiratory infections, caused by its shortened snouts.
To handle a Netherland Dwarf, its handler must approach it gently. If you pick it up, you must ensure that all of its legs are firmly supported, but avoid holding them tightly. Dwarfs, at times, can be extremely flighty, so frequent, gentle handling is critical for showmanship. Young children are advised not to hold them, as they are easy to drop because of their size. For nail trimming, it can be easier to wrap the rabbit in a towel to make them feel more secure.
Netherland Dwarf rabbits often reach 7 to 10+ years, making them a true long-term project. To ensure its long life, provide a proper diet and a safe environment.
A Netherland Dwarf rabbits' size means they consume significantly less feed than larger breeds, lowering its daily cost. When buying a dwarf, the price depends on the rabbit's quality and the breeder. It mainly ranges from $20 to $400.
