A rabbit's diet is crucial to know about. All rabbits' stomachs are very sensitive and do not like sudden food changes. When you get your rabbit, make sure to check what pellets its breeder has been using. Usually, the breeder will provide you or tell you the brand of food that they are using. Check at the bottom of this page for more information on this.
While hay and pellets make up a rabbit's diet, they also need water and greens. Read the Baby Rabbit's Food Diet or the Adult Rabbit's Food Diet to see what type of hay to get. Before feeding certain types of greens to your rabbit, always ensure they are safe!
The most common greens for a rabbit are listed below
Romaine lettuce
Parsely
Cilantro
Dill
Mint
Do not feed them carrots.
When you have a younger rabbit (under six months), the food is slightly different. For a start, a rabbit can have unlimited pellets until it is six months old. When introducing greens, it is important to take it slow.
Alfalfa hay is always the best hay to use for young rabbits. Hay should be the biggest part of their diet. Rabbits do not like it when there is a sudden change to their diet, and if there is a change, a rabbit can get sick. And lastly, a rabbit can get as much water as it wants. Water bottles are not recommended for rabbits, because a rabbit can drink as much as a small dog, so it is hard for them to get that amount from their bottle.
An adult rabbit's diet is different from a baby's. A full-grown rabbit should have two feeding times, one in the morning and one at night, for pellets. As they reach six months, they can no longer have unlimited pellets. Depending on their weight, you should give them 1/4 cup per 5 pounds of body weight per day. They are allowed unlimited hay. Do not give your rabbit as many treats as it wants, and always have water out. If you want to find out what type of bowls to get, click here for a detailed description of what your rabbit needs. When buying hay, keep in mind that rabbits can only eat Timothy hay, Orchard hay, or Meadow hay. Be sure to replace the rabbit's water every day, as it can become dirty very quickly.
